The RX 350 starts at $52,775 and the X5 xDrive40i at $72,050, a gap of about $19,000 before options. The gap grows the longer you own the SUV. CarEdge estimates 10-year maintenance and repair at $7,840 for the RX 350 and $19,459 for the X5. It puts the chance of a major repair at 21.14% for the RX and 56.41% for the X5. The RX 350h is rated at 37 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. It uses less fuel in traffic than on the open road, which suits stop-and-go South Bay commuting. The X5 xDrive40i is rated at 25 mpg combined. If you can charge at home, the RX 450h+ and X5 xDrive50e both offer 38 miles of electric range, enough for many Torrance-to-El Segundo round trips without using gas.

Power and driving feel

This is the X5's strongest argument. The base six-cylinder makes 375 hp, and BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 5.2 seconds. The M60i V8 makes 523 hp. The quickest RX, the RX 500h F SPORT Performance, makes 366 hp. If you drive mostly for the enjoyment of it, the X5 will feel more athletic. If you drive mostly to get somewhere, the RX's quieter, softer tuning is easier to live with every day.

Space and towing

X5

Both seat five. The X5 is the bigger cargo hauler: 33.9 cu ft behind the rear seat and 72.3 with it folded, against 29.6 and 46.2 in the RX. Towing is where they differ most, at up to 7,200 lb for the X5 and 3,500 lb for the RX. For beach gear, strollers and Costco runs, the RX is enough. For a boat trailer, you'd need the X5.

Lexus ranked #1 in J.D. Power's 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study (151 problems per 100 vehicles, against BMW's 198). The RX won Kelley Blue Book's 2026 Best Resale Value Award for luxury midsize SUVs. iSeeCars found the RX 350 lost 32.8% over five years, compared with 57.1% for the X5 hybrid. On crash-test awards the X5 leads. It earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The RX rated Good in most IIHS tests but Poor in the updated moderate-overlap test, which measures rear-seat passenger protection, so it received no 2026 award.34

Both models are changing for the 2027 model year. That's worth knowing if you're buying this fall.

2027 Lexus RX

The 2027 RX is an update, not a redesign. It gets reorganized grades (Premium, Premium+, Luxury and three F SPORT versions) and new detail touches. Lexus has announced pricing starting at $55,450, and the 2027 RX arrives at dealers this fall.5

2027 BMW X5

The 2027 X5 is an all-new generation. The X5 40 xDrive makes 394 hp and starts at $72,100 plus $1,450 destination. It adds BMW's Panoramic iDrive and a 17.9-inch center screen, and it goes on sale in October 2026. A new model year can bring first-year issues, so check early owner feedback before you commit.6
